Keep it cool.
For some, showers are the only window to a much elusive ‘me time’, that the end of a session is marked with pruney fingers
However, the heat from the shower can soften the skin’s oils – think coconut butter and how it softens when in contact with heat – which makes it virtually effortless for soap to wash away and strip the skin’s natural oil barrier. While of course we need to cleanse excess oil from our skin to prevent body odor and keep our pores happy and healthy, an absence of this oil leads to easily dry, itchy skin.
The best thing you can do for your skin if you can’t bear the thought of losing this precious me time, spend a couple minutes maximum in hot water, and complete your shower in lukewarm water. This will ensure that your skin doesn’t get 1) dry, 2) irritated, 3) red.
Short and sweet.
And keep in mind that showering isn’t about how often, but how well you do it.
A maximum of 10 minutes is recommended, according to a study by Iowa University, to maintain healthy hair and skin. This ensures that your skin’s pH has a chance to reset to its natural levels.
Skipping and shower here and there, or even showering 2-3 times a week, won’t be life threatening.
Hair first, body last.
But don’t let all your effort go to waste. Pay attention to the order of your steps.
Always wash your body after you’ve rinsed away all the shampoo and conditioner from your hair and body. Doing so before washing your hair can leave residue that will end up clogging the pores, leading to oiliness and even breakouts on sensitive areas like the chest, shoulders, and back.
Nothing changed at all
Go soap free.
And when it finally comes down to rub a dub dub, stick with moisturizing options compared to a traditional soap or scented body wash.
Soap isn’t necessary for a deep clean, and can actually be more harmful in the long run. Use soap on areas where you sweat most, like the underarms and groin, and opt for a hydration product for other areas of the body.
Anything that contains anti-bacterial properties or artificial scents can be irritating to the body, and washcloths and loofahs can become a party of bacteria and mold, so your hands – or an exfoliator is perfect.
Get down and dirty – exfoliate.
Natural exfoliators like the Jungle Botanics Natural Body Glow Nutshell Scrub are perfect options for a soap-free, deep clean.
Its round-cut, 100% natural walnut shell granules gently exfoliate the skin of dead skin, oils, and other impurities to leave it looking and feeling brighter and clearer.
Even better, it contains moisturizing and nourishing ingredients like shea butter, cacao butter, avocado oil, argan oil, and more to keep the skin free of that tight, dryness that comes after using conventional soaps.
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.
The human body is made up of an average of 60% water. Without it, basic bodily functions wouldn’t be possible, such as skin cell regeneration, which is crucial to the appearance and health of our complexion.
As soon as you step out of the shower, fight the urge to wipe your skin dry. Pat it down and finish with a moisturizer to lock in all the hard work you put into keeping it healthy and nourished.
